I was watching a documentary on the 9/11 incident the other day and this particular story really got to me.
One man said that he was trapped on one of the floors of the building. The room was pitch black and filled with smoke and fog. He heard some people calling out "Is anybody there?".
So he called back to them and they asked him to follow their voices. They didn't continue on their way down till he was helped out of the rubble. He was finally going down to safety. He knew where he was going now and he couldn't wait to see his family.
He and the other people who were rescued hurried down the stairs but he noticed that the men who had saved him stopped at every floor and called out to see if there was anyone they could help.If they saw that someone needed their help, they didn't hesitate for even a second to go in and get them.
This is what the man who was hurrying down to his family said - " We all wanted to get out of that building that was suffocating us. But that is the difference between heroes and me. I just went down to safety, to meet my family while those other men said NO. They weren't going to let people die. They knew that this thing had happened to all of us and they were going to do all they could to help people."
Those men were never seen again.
Many people were saved by them I guess.
Most were in a hurry to go down to safety and wouldn't have given those men a second look.
Some would have turned back and mumbled a thanks. Only a handful would have turned around, and looked into their eyes with gratitude.
They were life savers, those men were.
They show you that there is still good left in this world.
I want to be a hero.
But it's not easy. The courage you require.
To be a hero you also need to help people who don't care about what you did and are not thankful at all.
It's tough. Not being appreciated.
That's the worst feeling.
But there are still men who do it.
They don't need others love or encouragement or appreciation.
They just do it because someone has to.
